SJ Pottery, located in Bethel, Missouri, is a limited production pottery studio, producing traditionally inspired redware, wood fired salt-glazed stoneware, and whatever else catches the fancy of pottery artists Joseph Jostes and Susan Skinner. Joe and Sue truly are a unique couple.
SJ Pottery was started in 1988. Joseph has been making pottery since 1980; Sue since 1986. Together they've been selected by Early American Life as one of America's Top Traditional Craftsmen.
Their work is inspired by many historic folk pottery traditions, not just German, but French, English and American as well. While they don't focus on reproductions, they bring along the history of hand-making and decorating each item, using time-proven methods of production.
Interpreting what has been done allows Jostes and Skinner to add a link to the existing style of traditional pottery. In retelling the traditional story they create items that feel familiar while still offering a personal voice in the creative process.
